The inshore and backwater fishing has slowed a little due to the inconsistent weather patterns we have experienced lately. The up and down temps have kept the water cooler and prevented some of our inshore species from moving in. This should change as soon as spring has fully sprung and the fish get more active in the warmer water temps.

On a good note the flounder are showing up! They are about two weeks late showing up. On Thursday we Caught 2o flounder in four hours. The only problem is that on two were keeper. This is a good sign… The keeper size flounder will be here any day now! The next two weeks should be prime time for the flounder bite.

We have been catching bluefish at the jetties from 2 to 8 lbs. Redfish and black drum are still biting as they have all winter. It will only get better as the weather and water warms up in the weeks ahead. This will provide us with a lot of action and a good variety of inshore fish to pursue too and will provide us with good numbers of reds and speckled trout along with flounder to produce our Carolina inshore slams.

We have had to cancel six Gulf Steam Charters last week due to the wind blowing 15 to 30 knots out of ENE. ENE over ten knots makes it for a nasty and unsafe day on the water. Before last week we had canceled on the average of three a week for our Myrtle Beach Gulf Steam Fishing Charters for the month of April. May is not off to a start for Gulf Stream Fishing so far. Lets hope this wind will lay out and get a high move in and lay the wind out so we can go fishing.

We have been able to move some of our customer who want to go the Gulf Stream Fishing to our Backwater/Inshore Fishing for Redfish, Black Drum, Flounder and Trout charters to give them a chance to get out on the water fishing while there stay in Myrtle Beach.

Within feet of the state line, the northern end of the Grand Strand harbors a unique estuary with local and worldly significance. On a grand scale, Walter Maxwell’s 1,780-pound tiger shark — caught from a Cherry Grove pier in 1964 — remains untouched after almost 50 years, and is the only all-tackle world record from South Carolina waters.

But light-tackle anglers recognize this area for an entirely different reason as April arrives.

The two-lane boat ramp on the north end of 53rd Avenue in Cherry Grove gets more than its fair share of traffic, and for good reason. April means flounder around these parts, as Cherry Grove’s pocket-sized estuary fills up with hungry flounder moving in from the ocean through Hog Inlet when the rest of the region’s fishing barometer remains cold.

The Cherry Grove region has only 1,000 acres of shallow marsh between the mainland and the narrow barrier island that’s full of houses and high-rise hotels — and only 10 percent of that marsh has fishable depths for anglers with small boats. But this shallow estuary supports a tremendous invasion of flounder early in the spring when warm days become a regular happenstance.

Capt. Keith Logan of North Myrtle Beach Fishing Charters begins his spring charter season in Cherry Grove’s tepid waters. According to Logan, the regionally-unique locale is the hottest place around.

“The shallow water and protection from the wind allow the water to warm quicker than others,” said Logan (843-907-0064). “It’s shallow in there; the water will be five degrees warmer than the ICW and Little River Inlet.”

The bottom of Cherry Grove’s shallow estuary is covered with dark-colored sand and mud. On low tide, inhabitable water is restricted to the main channel and a few choice tributaries. Yet, these fish will pour into these estuaries as soon as the water temperature climbs into the mid- to upper 60s.

“Some flounder will be caught in cooler water, but 68 degrees is the key temperature to watch for and it’s when the fish start to bite well,” Logan said.

Wahoos are being caught  in the 20 to 50lbs range. Mahi are showing up in shcool in the 10 to 15 lbs range with the bigger 25 to 30lbs mahi mixed in with them. Come and join in on the high speed action of stand-up tackle as you battle the fierce fighting creatures that call the Gulf Stream their home. The cobalt blue water of Gulf Stream is located some 60 miles offshore .

The wahoo are hanging around structure on the bottom and bait that is in the column.  Mahi are schooled up around the Sargassum patches. Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna are running the rip and hang around the temp. breaks. Trolling Ballyhoo on Capt. Joe Shute’s Fish Finder Shirts in black/purple or red/black. Capt.
